Former footballer Patrice Evra has shared his take on why people hate Cristiano Ronaldo and compared one aspect of his attitude with Lionel Messi. He hailed the former's self-confidence and good looks.
Evra explained on Football Extra on Sony Sports Network, that Cristiano's attitude is the reason why some prefer Messi over him. The former Manchester United star also cracked a joke about girlfriends falling for Ronaldo's looks, which he claimed was why "boyfriends" hated him.
“Compared to Messi, Cristiano isn’t afraid to go out and say I’m the best. People might say he is arrogant, but you don’t see Messi doing it even though he feels the same. That’s why people criticise Ronaldo and also he is good looking, so when the boyfriend goes to watch the game, the girlfriend already loves Ronaldo and that’s why they hate him." Evra said.
Patrice Evra has played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester United between 2006 and 2009. They won three Premier League titles and a Champions League title, among other honors. During these years, they shared the pitch 121 times and had two joint-goal participations.
This is not the first time Evra has spoken for his former teammate. He has always been supportive of the Portuguese talisman, praising him for his work ethic.
When Patrice Evra revealed why he prefers Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi
On Rio Ferdinand's YouTube channel, Patrice Evra once revealed why he prefers Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi. The Frenchman praised Ronaldo for his work ethic and hardworking nature.
"I want to explain why I say Ronaldo every time. It's not just because he's my brother. It's because I'm in love with [his] work ethic. God just gave Messi a talent, while Cristiano had to work for it." Evra said. (via Marca)
Evra also claimed that Messi had the work ethic of Cristiano Ronaldo, he would have won 15 Ballons d'Or.
"Even if he had the talent, but he had to work for it. I think if Messi had the same work ethic as Cristiano, Messi would probably have 15 Ballon d'Ors today. I'm just in love with people working hard. That's why I pick Cristiano." he added. (via Marca)
He also came to Cristiano's defense ahead when there were questions raised about the forward being a part of Portugal's squad for Euro 2024. Evra claimed that Ronaldo is the "best player in the world" and people who criticize him are only jealous of him.
It remains to be seen whether Cristiano Ronaldo is able to fulfill his dream and win the Euros with Portugal once again after his triumph in 2016. The Selecao will face Czech Republic in their opening match of the Euro 2024 on Tuesday, June 18.
