"When your idol is Lionel Andres Messi" - Fans troll Alphonso Davies as he misses Panenka penalty in Copa America 3rd-place match against Uruguay

Canada captain Alphonso Davies was the butt of jokes from football fans after he missed a penalty in the Copa America third-place match on Saturday, July 13. Uruguay overcame Canada on penalties after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes to claim the bronze medal at the tournament in the USA.

Jesse Marsch has had Canada show significant improvement in his short stint as manager so far, and they showed further proof against Uruguay. The Canadians fell to defending champions Argentina in the semi-final and impressed against Uruguay, coming within seconds of what would arguably have been their greatest achievement.

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies missed the decisive spot-kick that sealed his side's fate in the penalty shootout after a failed Panenka attempt. He managed to beat the goalkeeper but saw his effort come back off the crossbar with what was his country's second miss of the shootout. Uruguay were perfect from the spot and won the game 4-3 after Davies missed.

Football fans on X criticized the Bayern Munich man for costing his team a place on the podium after another brave showing against Uruguay.

"When your idol is Lionel Andres Messi," a fan wrote.

Another fan trolled Alphonso Davies for repeating what Lionel Messi had done unsuccessfully earlier in the tournament.

"He literally copied his idol 🤣🤣🤣 " they wrote.

A third fan shared the same sentiment, mocking the Canadian star.

"Bro was trying to recreate that pessi penalty miss 😂😂 " they commented.

A fan opined that the left-back has missed out on a chance to represent Real Madrid.

"Bro just lost his change to play for Madrid lol," they tweeted.

Another fan wrote that the penalty reminded them of Messi's missed attempt:

"First thing I thought about😭😭"

In a battle between two former Leeds United managers, Marcelo Bielsa and his Uruguay team came out on top thanks to a late equalizer and some well-struck penalties. La Celeste gained some redemption after their disappointing defeat at the hands of Colombia in the Copa America semi-final.

Luis Suarez rolls back the years in Copa America win over Canada as Alphonso Davies leaves disappointed

Veteran Uruguay striker Luis Suarez showed why he was named in the Uruguay squad for Copa America 2024 with a quality display against Canada. The 37-year-old was on the scoresheet for La Celeste as they came from behind in the game to win on penalties.

Suarez was used sparingly throughout the tournament and despite being 37, was the reason many Uruguayan journalists criticized coach Marcelo Bielsa. The Inter Miami man was brought off the bench at halftime with the score 1-1 thanks to goals from Rodrigo Bentancur (8') and Ismael Kone (22').

Canada went ahead through Jonathan David in the 80th minute before Suarez scored his 69th international goal in the 92nd minute. The striker followed this up by scoring his penalty in the shootout to put his side in a strong position to win the game.

Alphonso Davies' missed penalty ensured victory for La Celeste. The Canadians, however, can take pride in how they performed against the likes of Argentina and Uruguay in the competition.
