"When he's not there, it shows and you can feel it" - Christophe Galtier believes PSG superstar is unfairly criticized

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Christophe Galtier has defended Marco Verratti from criticism ahead of the club's Ligue 1 clash with Auxerre. Verratti has come under fire following the club's dismal performances in cup competitions this season, especially the UEFA Champions League.

Reports from France (Le Parisien via GFFN) have indicated that PSG view him as an expendable player. The Parisians are looking to cut ties with the Italian midfielder, who is also said to be open to a move away (via L’Equipe) from the club.

Speaking at a press conference before PSG's match with Auxerre on Sunday, May 21, Galtier spoke of Verratti's importance to the team and hit back at 'severe criticism' aimed at him.

He said (via RMC Sport):

"He took a blow to the knee and the muscle. He trained individually today. It seems to be much better, we will review tomorrow. We are hopeful that he can be with us in Auxerre."

He added:

"He's an important player. When he's not there, it shows and you can feel it in the game. Like the team at a certain point, he had a downturn. The slump coincided to the absence of many executives. But I find that the criticism of Marco is quite severe compared to what he does on the ground."

Verratti is currently dealing with a knee bruise and could miss PSG's trip to Auxerre.

Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal are reportedly looking to offer Paris Saint-Germain superstar Marco Verratti a huge contract worth €60 million per year.

Verratti has been linked with a move away from the Parisian club and French journalist Abdellah Boulma has named Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal as one of the many clubs looking to sign him in the summer.

The 30-year-old currently earns close to €15 million (via Capology) and Al-Hilal's offer could be too good of a deal for the Italian to turn down — if he is open to a move to the Middle East.

Verratti, who has made 34 appearances this season, has been a crucial part of his club's midfield for over a decade. He left Pescara in 2012 and join PSG for a €12m (£10.4m) fee. He has since played 412 times for the Parisians, scoring 11 goals and providing 61 assists.
