Why has Phil Foden flown back home despite England's Euro 2024 involvement? Journalist provides update

England midfielder Phil Foden flew back home despite being a part of the Three Lions squad in EURO 2024, where he featured in all three group games. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the reason behind his return to Albion on Wednesday, June 26.

Phil Foden has temporarily returned to be present for the birth of his third child. The Manchester City midfielder is in a relationship with Rebecca Cooke. They have two children - a four-year-old son named Ronnie and a three-year-old daughter named True.

Now, they are expecting their third child together, and Romano also revealed that Foden will return to the England squad in Germany by Sunday, June 30. The Three Lions are set to play in the EURO 2024 Round of 16 on the same day, but their opponents haven't been decided yet.

While they have had an underwhelming time at EURO 2024 so far, England finished at the top of Group C. They beat Serbia 1-0, thanks to a goal from Jude Bellingham. However, that was their only win, as they managed to only find a 1-1 draw against Denmark and a 0-0 draw against Slovenia.

It's currently uncertain if Foden will be a part of the starting XI that play against the Three Lions' eventual opponents in the Round of 16.

England legend on Three Lions' EURO 2024 campaign ahead of knockout stage

Legend Alan Shearer recently spoke about England's performances ahead of the Round of 16. While the Three Lions have made it past the group stage, they did so with rather subpar performances, scoring only two goals in their three games.

However, Alan Shearer has decided to focus on the positives, as he explained to BBC Sport (via TheMag):

"England can only go one way from here. We can only get better. We have to because what we have seen up until now at these Euros will not be good enough for us to go the distance like when we reached the final last time."

However, he also made comments about how "uninspiring" the performances from the Three Lions had been at EURO 2024, before adding:

"One of the most concerning things about watching England is that I don’t see a pattern of play when we bring the ball forward. I just see us struggling to find one."

Gareth Southgate will be hoping he can find more attacking power from his portfolio of impressive players. He notably has impressive stars like Harry Kane, who won the European Golden Shoe last season with 36 goals. Jude Bellingham, who won La Liga's best player award last season is also on his squad.
