Will Lionel Messi play for Inter Miami against DC United? Journalist provides fitness update

Journalist Gaston Edul has provided a fitness update regarding Lionel Messi, revealing that the forward would play against DC United on May 18. This comes after growing uncertainties around the legendary superstar's availability due to injury.

Messi didn't play in the midweek when Miami faced off with Orlando City, and both sides were unable to find the goal at any point. The Herons were without their talisman and clearly struggled to provide an avenue for attacks or chance creations.

While Messi was unavailable for their trip to Orlando, it seemed like he wouldn't be fit enough to face DC United at Fort Lauderdale this weekend either. However, according to Gaston Edul, the Herons will have their talisman on the pitch with them.

Prior to Gaston Edul's revelation, Miami manager Tata Martino had told the press (via GOAL):

“Leo had some discomfort, but he trained every day, we did tests and they all came out very good. Having three games in a week, with him still in some pain, we felt it was prudent for him to sit out this game [against Orlando].
"The plan is for him to play Saturday, but we will take it day by day. He trained again [on Wednesday] and felt good, but we will not take any risk. We will see how he feels on Thursday and Friday.”

Messi's potential return will certainly be a source of joy for Inter Miami, as he's scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in just nine league games this season.

Inter Miami set to host DC United with hopes on Lionel Messi's fitness

MLS Eastern conference table toppers Inter Miami will host DC United at the Chase stadium on Saturday, with Lionel Messi reportedly set to play. The Miami-based side has been fantastic so far in the league but will hope they can maintain their fine form against the capital club.

The Herons will hope to return to winning ways after being held to a 0-0 draw against Orlando City in a Florida Derby. The draw saw the table toppers end a five-match winning streak.

Whether Lionel Messi is eventually available or not, his teammates will have to step up in his absence. They will need a win to maintain their hold of the top spot in the league as they sit just a point above Cincinnati FC, who have a game in hand. The Miami-based side have emerged as contender for the MLS title this season and will hope to show their credentials against DC.
