Will Lionel Messi sign a new contract at Inter Miami? Reliable Argentine journalist provides update
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are open to a contract extension that will allow the Argentine icon to stay at the MLS club for at least one more season after this campaign.
It comes amid news that Luis Suarez has signed a contract extension through the 2025 MLS season with Inter Miami.
Lionel Messi, 37, who joined Miami in the summer of 2023, will have this contract expire in 2025. Since his arrival, the former Barcelona man has taken the club to unprecedented heights, helping them win their first-ever trophy (Leagues Cup) in his debut season last year. This year, he helped Miami win their second title, the Supporters’ Shield, by topping the MLS regular-season points table.
While the Herons were eliminated by Atlanta United in the best-of-three series in the MLS Cup Playoffs, Messi's achievements with the club cannot be ignored. The Argentine icon is their all-time top goalscorer, scoring 34 goals in 39 games.
With his contract expiring next summer, speculations are rife that Lionel Messi may not sign new contract with Inter Miami. However, there's reportedly interest in renewing Messi’s contract beyond 2025, with the intention to extend it until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While the contract renewal is not finalised yet, negotiations are on track.
David Beckham on Javier Mascherano reuniting with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami
Inter Miami owner David Beckham is happy about his decision to appoint former Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano as the new coach of the Herons. Beckham said that Mascherano's determination and knowledge of the game make him a good fit as Miami manager.
The managerial role opened for Mascherano at Miami after Tata Martino stepped down last week for personal reasons. The move sees him reunited with his former Argentina and Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.
The 40-year-old signed a three-year contract that will keep him with the club till 2027. Speaking about the move, Beckham said (via TNT Sports)
"Throughout his career as one of the world’s best players and as an experienced coach, Javier has always demonstrated what makes him great - relentless determination with the knowledge, instincts and understanding to back it up," Beckham said.
"We’re very excited to welcome him to lead our team."
Javier Mascherano was recently the manager of Argentina U-20, coaching them at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
