"Won't even win the regular season next year", "Selling the whole club" - Fans react as Lionel Messi's Inter Miami sell key player to PL club
Fans on social media have reacted to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami selling Diego Gomez to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion. The Paraguayan midfielder joined The Herons from Club Libertad in July 2023 for a reported transfer fee of €2.70 million.
Gomez was one of the key players in the Inter Miami midfield this season. In 28 games across all competitions, he registered six goals and seven assists. Gomez also combined well with Lionel Messi in the attack, securing three joint goal participations in the 27 games played with the Argentine maestro.
According to Inter Miami's official statement, Diego Gomez's transfer fee ranks among the highest outbound transfers in the history of Major League Soccer. As per Transfermarkt, Brighton & Hove Albion have acquired the midfielder for €13 million.
However, many fans opined that Gomez's transfer might negatively affect Inter Miami's performances. Some popular reactions on X are as follows:
"Inter Miami won't even win the regular season next year," a fan opined on X.
"Bro you’re literally selling the whole club/ How about signing some players ?" commented another.
"Inter Miami really needs to bring more quality players," one fan chimed in.
One fan believed that one of the European juggernauts would usurp him from his new club soon.
"Going to miss him so much, he was an absolute workhorse, never stopped running, he’s got all the ability to become something really special, Brighton have an absolute gem in their hands but I don’t think he’ll be there too long before one of the big boys snaps him up," wrote the user.
"He started inconsistently but became one of the best players on the team. Hope he does well," praised another.
"Good luck, Diego! We'll miss you!' wished another user on X.
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas 'very confident' about Lionel Messi's contract extension
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas has broken his silence on Lionel Messi's contract extension chances with The Herons. The Argentine superstar's contract with Inter Miami expires at the end of next season and he is yet to sign a new deal.
In a recent interview, Jorge Mas talked about Messi's contract situation (via talkSPORT):
"As I said before, I'm very confident that he'll be opening our new stadium in '26. I'll be sitting with Leo, you know, now at some point in the offseason. And I'm optimistic that as long as Leo's health holds up, that we'll be seeing him in pink."
In just 39 games across competitions, Messi has already become the highest scorer for Inter Miami with 34 goals and 18 assists.
