Fans on X reacted after reigning champions Italy were knocked out of Euro 2024 after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in the Round of 16. The two nations faced each other at the Olympiastadion Berlin on Saturday, June 29.
The Swiss made a bright start to the game, nearly breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a top save to deny Breel Embolo after the latter was played through by Michel Aebischer.
Switzerland took a deserved lead in the 37th minute through Remo Freuler's exceptional finish. Donnarumma later made another breathtaking save, pushing Fabian Rieder's free-kick onto the woodwork. However, the Azzurri quickly became undone in the second half after Ruben Vargas made it 2-0, finding the top corner from inside the box.
To their credit, Italy nearly halved the deficit five minutes later after Fabian Schar's defensive header hit his post. The Azzurri were made to rue their misfortune in the 74th minute with Gianluca Scamacca's strike hitting the post as well. Switzerland defended well to secure the upset victory, booking their spot in the final eight.
