“You can’t even foul him because of his movements” - Dominik Szoboszlai impressed by Liverpool youngster in pre-season
Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has given his thoughts on his teammate Trey Nyoni after the latter's pre-season display against Real Betis on July 26. The latter came on for Curtis Jones around the half-hour mark and got over 40 minutes of action before being taken off himself.
Nyoni made a direct impact on the game, finding Dominik Szoboszlai with a simple pass from the halfway line. The Hungarian then combined with Mohamed Salah to score the game's only goal in the 34th minute.
Speaking of his finish for the goal, Szoboszlai told Liverpool's in-house media:
"It was a good pass from Trey [Nyoni]. It’s important that the No.6s see us and use us also. And of course, Mo knows how to play these balls."
The 23-year-old Liverpool midfielder, who was signed in a reported £60 million deal from RB Leipzig last year, then gave his verdict on Nyoni's performance. He said:
"I like him a lot, he is a really offensive player. I just said on the bench to [Jarell] Quansah, you can’t even foul him because of his movements and stuff like this. Everybody saw in the second half, Nat [Phillips] was a centre-back but otherwise everybody was young and almost none of them were 20. But they still did a good job, didn’t concede a goal and had chances. So yeah, a good future."
An England U18 international, Nyoni plays in central midfield and has impressive ball control for a player his age. He joined the Reds from Leicester City's academy in 2023 and was handed his senior debut by Jurgen Klopp in a 3-0 fifth-round FA Cup win against Southampton last season.
Arne Slot praised Liverpool's Trey Nyoni after Liverpool's win over Real Betis
Arne Slot gave his two cents on Trey Noni after Liverpool's pre-season win against Real Betis in Pittsburgh. The Dutch tactician, who took over the reins at Liverpool from Jurgen Klopp this summer, said (via BBC):
"That was the positive thing of Curtis going out for Trey [due to muscle injury], but of course for Curtis it's a pity that he couldn't play on.Trey did well, he was involved in the goal with a spot on pass between the lines and he was involved in our biggest chance in the second half.
"But he's only just turned 17 and his body still has to grow. We are really careful with him. He doesn't join every session. You can see his quality. He needs some time to grow to play at Premier League level but he's an interesting player."
Liverpool don't have a shortage of creative midfielders but with the club competing on four fronts, Nyoni will be hopeful of adding to his only senior appearance for the club.
The Reds now travel to Philadelphia as part of their pre-season tour of the USA, where they will face Arsenal at the Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday (July 31).
