“You can’t have that at any level” - Danny Simpson hits out at Manchester United star for ‘criminal’ mistake in loss to Spurs
Former Premier League defender Danny Simpson hit out at right-back Diogo Dalot after Manchester United's 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. He highlighted how Dalot failed to deal with Brennan Johnson as he scored Spurs' first goal of the night.
Speaking on MUTV, Simpson pointed out how Dalot was unable to track the run of the Tottenham star. He noted that the Portuguese star was slow to recover and never managed to get back in position to defend the back post. He said:
“I see the cross coming, and for Brennan Johnson to have that much space at the back post, I think it’s criminal. I think that’s Dalot’s position, I’m not sure whether he was inverted from midfield or at full back, and he needs to recover. After two or three minutes, its obviously a disaster. I think the goal from start to finish was really poor.
"We’ve got to be better at closing the space and reacting, and everyone getting over, shuffling across. I think Ugarte, he could have reacted quicker and got over, reacted too late then at that point. Diogo Dalot had his hands up apologising – but you can’t have that at any level.”
Manchester United went on to lose the match 3-0, with Bruno Fernandes getting sent off just before half-time. The Red Devils captain received a controversial straight red card and is now suspended for the next three league matches.
Former Liverpool star criticizes Manchester United's Diogo Dalot
Football pundit Jamie Redknapp also criticized Diogo Dalot for his poor performance in Manchester United's defeat to Spurs. He pointed out how Dalot was just jogging instead of staying tight with the Tottenham star.
He said on Sky Sports while analyzing the game:
“It’s so bad from Dalot. You see him there. We have highlighted him right on the other side of the pitch. You think as a left-back, just get back in, match the run, follow him, follow him. He doesn’t. He is jogging., That is so bad from his perspective.”
Manchester United are now 12th in the Premier League after six matches this season. They could slip to 13th in the table if Bournemouth manage to beat Southampton on Monday night.
