"You once again demonstrated your class and brilliant tennis" - Real Madrid send message to Carlos Alcaraz as he defends Wimbledon title
Real Madrid have sent a congratulatory message to former ATP World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz for winning his second Wimbledon title on Sunday (July 14). For the second straight year at SW 19, the 21-year-old beat Novak Djokovic in the final.
Unlike the title match in 2023 - which went the distance - it was a far more straightforward affair for the Spaniard this time. Alcaraz breezed through the first two sets dropping only two games apiece.
At 5-4, 40-0, Alcaraz saw three championship points on serve come and go as Djokovic broke back. However, the Spaniard regrouped in the ensuing tiebreak to become only the sixth male player in the Open Era to win the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double in the same year.
Real Madrid tweeted that all Spanish and Madrid fans are proud of 'Carlitos' for his achievement, tweeting (as translated from Spanish):
"Congratulations on your fourth Grand Slam, dear @carlosalcaraz. Today you once again demonstrated your class and brilliant tennis to become champion in @Wimbledon for the second time. All of Spain and all Madrid fans are very proud of you."
Los Blancos are coming off a fabulous 2023-24 season, winning three titles, including their second La Liga-UEFA Champions League double in three years.
How many Real Madrid players are still involved at Euro 2024?
Real Madrid are set to have two players - four - if departing players are also considered - involved in UEFA Euro 2024 final, where Spain take on England in Berlin on Sunday (July 14).
Dani Carvajal and the outgoing duo of Nacho Fernandez and Joselu are in the La Roja squad, while Jude Bellingham plays for the Three Lions. Among the quartet, only Bellingham has scored at the tournament, netting twice.
Meanwhile, La Roja are looking to win a record fourth European Championship title, while England are in search of their first. So regardless of who triumphs, Los Blancos are set to have at least one Euro 2024 winner.
