“You don’t bloody say it, you fool” - Roy Keane hits out at Manchester United star for his comments on performance
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has blasted Christian Eriksen for his comments after their UEFA Europa League draw against Twente on 26 September.
The Red Devils certainly did not have the start they wanted for the 2024-25 Europa League campaign. United locked horns with FC Twente in a fixture from which many Red Devils fans expected a straightforward win.
However, they had to settle for a 1-1 draw, with Eriksen scoring Manchester United's only goal of the match in the first half. Speaking to reporters after the game, the Danish midfielder made an honest admission about his opponents 'wanting' the victory more than the Red Devils.
His comments did not sit well with Keane, who slammed the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and labeled him a 'fool'. Speaking on The Overlap's Stick to Football podcast, Keane said (via GIVEMESPORT):
"Eriksen's not going to close the gap on Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City - absolutely not."
The former Manchester United midfielder added on Eriksen's comments:
"So he's coming out after the game a couple of weeks ago, and he actually said [they wanted it more]. Even if you feel that and it hasn't happened where you felt they wanted it more than you, you don't bloody say it, you fool."
He further stated:
"Someone should get a grip of him and say 'Why are you sending messages about us?'"
United will next face Brentford in the Premier League on 19 October.
What Christian Eriksen said after Manchester United's Europa League draw against Twente
After the Red Devils secured only a point from their Europa League fixture against Twente, Christian Eriksen opened up about the team's frustration. The Denmark international said (via Eurosport):
“Mostly disappointed as a team, I think obviously we wanted more but in the end it was far from good enough. They looked like they wanted it more than us and that can’t be right.“
Eriksen was then asked whether Manchester United's poor second-half performance was why they couldn't secure all three points. He replied:
“Everyone is looking at themselves. Everyone is professional footballers, they know what to do and know what can’t happen and a game like today, obviously we don’t lose but it feels like a loss. That’s something that, at home, against Twente can’t happen.“
Eriksen arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 from Brentford on a free transfer. The midfielder has made 80 appearances for Manchester United, scoring six goals and providing 16 assists.
