"You're witnessing pure history" - Argentina team's official account makes post as Lionel Messi's side debut 50th anniversary Adidas home kit
Argentina's official team account posted an official photo featuring Lionel Messi to mark the side's debut of its official 50th anniversary Adidas home kit. The post showed the iconic player donning the gold-trimmed kit during the side's 1-0 win over Peru in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday (November 19).
The South American nation has enjoyed some of its best moments with an Adidas kit. The reigning world champions have won two of their three World Cups and recently retained the Copa America while sporting jerseys made by the German kit maker.
To celebrate the partnership, the official team account made a post that read:
"You're witnessing pure history."
Lionel Messi enjoys a strong relationship with Adidas as well. The Argentine legend, who has scored 112 goals and 61 assists in 191 games for his country, is an official ambassador of the brand. He has been a partner of the brand since 2006 and signed a lifetime contract with them in 2017.
Lionel Messi and Argentina return to winning ways
Lionel Messi and Argentina returned to winning ways against Peru after their recent 2-1 loss to Paraguay in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers on November 14. The Copa America holders took a 1-0 victory on November 19, but given their dominance in the game, they would have expected to put the ball in the back of the net more than once.
The hosts had the lion's share of the possession at La Bombonera, with 74% of the ball and 10 shots (three on target). Their opponents only managed two shots in the game, none of which managed to test Emiliano Martinez in goal.
The first half of the match was a controlled affair with few chances, and Argentina failed to get more than one shot on target. However, the game's defining moment came in the second half after Lionel Messi waltzed past the Peruvian players to float a delicious cross to Lautaro Martinez. The Inter Milan goal machine buried the chance brilliantly to give his side the lead (55').
The win sees the South American giants maintain their place at the top of the CONMEBOL table, five points ahead of second-placed Uruguay. The two sides will face each other in the next international break in March.
