"You've got to keep him" - Gary Neville claims Manchester United should have kept in-form Premier League star
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has stated that the Red Devils shouldn't have sold Danny Welbeck in 2014.
Manchester United academy graduate Danny Welbeck was loaned to Preston and Sunderland before he was eventually sold by the Red Devils to Arsenal. The deal was completed in the last few hours of the deadline day as the Gunners signed the Englishman for a reported fee of £16 million.
Welbeck made 124 appearances for the senior team of Manchester United, bagging 29 goals and 17 assists. He later joined Watford on a free transfer in August 2019. After just one year, he then penned a deal with Brighton and Hove Albion in October 2020.
Aged 33, Danny Welbeck has given a solid performance in Brighton's frontline this season. He has scored four goals in seven Premier League matches for the Seagulls. Talking about Welbeck's form on Stick to Football via Sky Bet, Roy Keane joked:
"Could he go back to United maybe?"
Replying to the question, Gary Neville claimed that he's in better form than any other attacker at Old Trafford. Neville also added that United shouldn't have let him leave the club in 2014. He said:
"He's in better form than any of the United front players, by far. Danny Welbeck, to be fair, should have never been let go at United."
He added:
"Roy, if you've got a squad of 24, 23, and you want to keep five or six strikers, he's got to be one of those. You've got to keep him."
However, Roy Keane ultimately disagreed with Neville's statement and stated that Welbeck is a good player, but not on the level to play for the Red Devils.
Manchester United to sell Harry Maguire in January, taking huge loss: Reports
Erik ten Hag's Manchester United have reportedly decided to sell English defender Harry Maguire in the upcoming January transfer window, as per the Daily Star.
According to the aforementioned report, the Red Devils are ready to take a loss on Maguire's transfer fee. He joined the Old Trafford outfit in 2019 from Leicester City for a then-world record fee of £80 million.
However, United are willing to let the Englishman leave for a reported fee of £10 million. Harry Maguire's current contract with United will expire next summer, and the Premier League giants have three options. They can sell the Englishman in January or let him leave on a free transfer next summer.
They can also offer him a one-year contract extension, but the chances are unlikely. Currently 14th in English top-tier football, the Red Devils have had a shaky start to their campaign in 2024/25.
