“Young people have to learn to respect their leaders” - Lionel Messi’s old comment on Manchester United target resurfaces amid transfer links
Lionel Messi’s advice for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) midfielder Manuel Ugarte has resurfaced amid transfer rumors linking the Uruguayan with a move to Manchester United.
The comments came after Argentina played Uruguay in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in November, last year. Uruguay won the heated clash 2-0, with Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez scoring for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. During the game, Ugarte was seen making obscene gestures towards Messi and Rodrigo De Paul.
Messi said in his post-match comments, as quoted by the Daily Mail (via Manchester Evening News):
“These kinds of games, qualifiers, against Uruguay, it's always like that. I prefer not to say what I think. Young people have to learn to respect their elders. These games are always intense but very respectful, so they have to learn a little.”
Ugarte has been linked with a move to Manchester United as the club looks to add depth to their midfield with former Real Madrid star Casemiro’s future in doubt. The Uruguayan player was also linked with a move to Chelsea last summer before joining PSG from Sporting CP.
Ugarte made 37 appearances across competitions for the French giants last season. He contributed three assists as they reached the Champions League semi-finals and won the Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions.
According to a report from L’Equipe, PSG have rejected a bid from Manchester United for the 23-year-old as it didn’t match their valuation. However, they are open to offers for the player and will listen to improved bids.
Lionel Messi provides injury update after 1-0 Copa America win over Chile
Lionel Messi played the full 90 minutes in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Chile in the Copa America 2024 on Tuesday (June 25) despite suffering an injury. The Inter Miami forward looked uncomfortable and had to receive medical assistance in the first half after taking a few hard tackles from the Chile players.
Messi is set to undergo tests for an adductor injury on Wednesday. In his post-match comments, he said:
“What do I know? It bothers me a little, but I was able to finish playing. I hope it's nothing serious. It was at the beginning of the first play. I didn't feel a puncture, it became hard. It was difficult for me to move freely because of the discomfort. Tomorrow I will see how we continue.”
Argentina have qualified for the Copa America quarter-finals following their win over Chile. They will take on Peru in their final group game at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Saturday, June 29.
