Neymar receives Xavi's backing in the midst of the diving controversy

Neymar embraces Xavi after scoring a goal for Barcelona

Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has jumped to the defence of team-mate Neymar, who has come under fire for being brought down too easily after a tackle, Yahoo! Sport reports.

Neymar, 21, who recently moved to Barcelona from Santos has come under scrutiny for his antics after tackles but Xavi feels that the Brazilian is being targeted by rival clubs.

“All the focus is on Neymar, but he is not play acting or diving,” Xavi told RAC1.

“These accusations happen because we have a lot of rivals. The people in Madrid are looking for things they don’t like and then try to put a certain label on a player.

“Neymar has the skills to be a big star, if he’s not one already at this stage. We’re lucky to have him.”

The Spanish international also said that Barcelona will continue to thrive even after he calls time on his Nou Camp career.

“Barcelona will keep on winning and playing well without me. Nobody is indispensable,” the 33-year-old said.

“Barca should not be looking for a direct replacement for me as that would only put extra pressure on the guy taking my place.”

Xavi has had an illustrious career with his club and country winning 7 La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and the 2010 World Cup with Spain along with two consecutive Euro titles in 2008 and 2012.
