NorthEast United sign French-Senegal forward Victor Mendy

Victor Mendy (centre) last played for Gabala FC in Azerbaijan Premier League

Reports on the official website of Hero Indian Super League have confirmed a new addition into the NorthEast United forward line with French Senegalese football Victor Mendy coming in for Ivory Coast striker Boubacar Sango, who has not made a single start for the Highlanders this season.

33-year-old Mendy last played for Gabala FC in the Azerbaijan Premier League. He has 112 caps for the team, in which he has scored 29 times in his five year spell at the club. He is also Gabala’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Apart from Azerbaijan, Mendy also has played in Turkey for Bucaspor and in France for Villemomble Sports, Paris FC, FC Metz and Clermont Foot. He also has one international cap for Senegal when he played against Iran in 2009.

NorthEast United, fresh of two back to back away victories now have a series of away matches as they look to seal their spot in the semis. A finisher is someone who they were looking for; however, Kamara and Silas scoring against Chennaiyin in their last match has eased a lot of pressure of Farias. The headache of goal difference still remains for the Venezuelan coach and he needs to better it at any cost.

The signing of the former Gabala man is hence a crucial one as the club desperately needs to better its conversion rate. There has however been no official announcement on the behalf of the team about the signing and it’s unsure if he will be available for the game against Kerala Blasters on Sunday.
