Olivier Giroud admits he nearly collapsed during France’s anthem at the World Cup
Arsenal and France striker Olivier Giroud had admitted that he is living the dream after helping Les Bleus to a perfect start in Brazil.
France have won their opening two games convincingly, beating Honduras 3-0 and then <Switzerland 5-2, in which Giroud-- scored the opener.
Giroud, who scored 16 goals in the Premier League last season for Arsenal, came off the bench in the opening win against Honduras but started against the Swiss and scored a powerful header on 17 minutes to get the scoring underway.
It was not only the first time he’ scored at a World Cup, but it marked France’s 100th goal in the competition, in total. He worked well with his teammates during the crushing win over a talented Swiss side.
Mathieu Valbuena, Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba all benefited from his movement and ability to hold up the ball.
After finishing fourth with Arsenal and then ending the season by winning the FA Cup, Giroud is certainly living the dream.
The Arsenal striker said: “I’m very proud to have scored France’s 100th goal in a World Cup.
“At the start of La Marseillaise (France’s national anthem) I nearly collapsed. The emotion was too strong. It was like a childhood dream. We need this to never stop.
“We are happy, we took great pleasure from the game against Switzerland. I felt the group was very committed. We are a good team.
“I didn’t imagine such a start to our World Cup. We have scored eight goals, it’s great.
“Okay, we also conceded two at the end of the game but we won’t let that spoil our mood.”
