An open letter to David Luiz from a Chelsea fan

David Luiz

Dear David Luiz,

Let me start of by saying that I’m one of your biggest fans. I was very excited when you joined the Chelsea family three years ago, and my admiration of your character has grown exponentially since. Even when you make mistakes, there is something charismatic about you that doesn’t allow us to stay mad at you.

You have given us moments that we will cherish forever. Your volley against Manchester United, your penalty against Bayern Munich and your piledriver against Fulham to name a few. Not to mention your several man of the match displays in Europe that helped us win the Champions League. It’s not just these spectacular goals and performances that has won our hearts. It’s your passion that is reflected in your style of football that makes you so special. You truly have become our cult hero.

I’m sure you have been told enough times that you are a gifted player. I know it sounds very cliched, but it pains me to see you not fully realize your potential. You are able to make up for your lack of positional sense and concentration with your pace and technical ability. So, why not focus just a little bit more on the pitch to shed the tag of a talented defender and become a legendary libero?

There is no doubt that you are becoming more and more mature. However, I must ask, did you get booked against Liverpool just to spend New years’ in Portugal? Jokes apart, your comments and interviews clearly reflect the wisdom that you have acquired over these last few years.

“I’m a central defender, and that’s the position I feel most comfortable in, but I’d play in goal or up front if I had to. I can only be grateful for having the privilege to do a job I love.”  That is all I wanted to hear. I sincerely hope that more players would inculcate your attitude.

What impresses me the most is the fact that your team spirit, energy and enthusiasm seem to rub off on our lads. You are an inspirational figure and I hope one day you will become captain for both club and country.

I hear the pundits are critical of your football. I can’t believe that they have the audacity to make such derogatory comments. A gentleman once said that you looked as though you were being controlled by a ten year old on a play station. Well, I say kudos to that ten year old!

As much as I want to see a change, I think you are perfect,  it is your style and personality that makes you the champion that you are. I urge you to stay at Stamford Bridge for many more years and continue to bring us joy, pride and glory.

David Luiz, you have brought a smile to all our faces. KTBFFH

Siddharth
