Peru and Chile get underway in the Copa America 2024 when they square off at the AT&T Stadium on Friday. Both sides have been drawn in Group A, alongside Canada and world champions Argentina, and will be looking to begin the campaign as they mean to go on.

Given their long-standing political disputes, the Clásico del Pacífico is one of the oldest rivalries in South America, with Peru and Chile going toe-to-toe for dominance.

Peru head into the 2024 Copa America looking to secure their first title since 1975, when they secured a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the final.

Ricardo Gareca’s men got to the finals in 2019 but were no match for a star-studded Brazil side as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against the Selecao.

Chile, on the other hand, have enjoyed more success in the Copa America, particularly in the last decade, where they have clinched the title on two occasions.

Their two title triumphs came in back-to-back editions as they edged out a Messi-led Argentina side on penalties in the 2015 and 2016 finals respectively.

Peru and Chile journey to the United States looking to clinch a third Copa America title, having both won the continental crown on two occasions.

Chile have won just one of their last eight competitive outings — losing five and picking up two draws — with a 2-0 victory over Peru in the World Cup qualifiers on October 2023 being the exception.

Peru have failed to win their last seven competitive matches, losing five and claiming two draws since beating Paraguay 2-0 in the World Cup qualifiers in March 2022.

Alexis Sanches currently leads Chile’s all-time chart for goals (51) and appearances (163) since his debut in April 2006 and the Inter Milan man will be one to keep an eye on.
