Peru vs Chile Prediction and Betting Tips | June 21st 2024
Peru will get their Copa America 2024 campaign underway against Chile at AT&T Stadium on Friday. Reigning champions Argentina and debutants Canada are the other two teams in Group A.
Peru are two-time champion and last won the title in 1975. Chile have also lifted the trophy twice, in 2015 and 2016.
Both teams were eliminated by Brazil in the knockout stage in the last edition, with La Blanquirroja suffering a 1-0 loss in the semi-finals and La Roja losing 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
The 1975 champions head into the competition on a five-game unbeaten streak and have won three of their four friendly games in 2024. The 2016 winners played just one friendly earlier this month, recording a 3-0 win over Paraguay.
Peru vs Chile Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- The two neighbors have a long-standing rivalry and have met 85 times in all competitions. The meetings between them are often referred to as Clásico del Pacífico or the Pacific Derby.
- Chile have been the dominant side in these meetings with 47 wins. Peru have got the better of their southern rivals 24 times while 14 games have ended in draws.
- They last met in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in October last year, with La Roja recording a 2-0 home win.
- Interestingly, the last three meetings between the two teams have ended with a scoreline of 2-0.
- They have met 21 times in the Copa America thus far. These meetings have been contested closely between them, with six games ending in draws and the 2015 winners having a narrow 8-7 lead in wins.
- La Roja have just one win in their last seven games in the Copa America while suffering four losses.
- La Blanquirroja have scored at least two goals in four of their last six appearances in the Copa America.
Peru vs Chile Prediction
La Blanquirroja kept clean sheets in their two friendlies earlier this month. They have won three of their last five meetings against Chile, including a 3-0 triumph in the 2019 Copa America, and will look to build on that form. They are yet to suffer a loss since Jorge Fossati took over as the head coach, winning three of the four games under his management.
La Roja have won two of their three friendlies in 2024 and their only loss this year came against France in March. They have scored just four goals in their last nine games in the Copa America, which is a cause for concern. Veteran goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is not 100% fit and will sit this one out.
Considering the current form of the two teams and the 1975 champions' better record in the Copa America, Peru are expected to eke out a narrow win.
Prediction: Peru 2-1 Chile
