Portugal's Sanches wins European Golden Boy prize

Monte Carlo, Oct 24 (IANS) Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches has won the European Golden Boy award, given to the best footballer under 21 years of age.

The Portuguese's performance that helped Portugal in winning Euro 2016 was the key element for him winning the award. He was named the best young player of Euro 2016, reports Efe.

The 19-year-old follows Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Anthony Martial in winning the award. He beat England's Marcus Rashford and France's Kingsley Coman to the award.

The award, established in 2003, is given by Italian newspaper Tuttosport after a vote by around 30 journalists.

He will receive the award later at a ceremony here on Monday.
