Poulsen: Perfect for Spurs?
After an away defeat to Burnley last week, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted that it’s impossible for them to win the title now. The Argentine was seen in a war of words with referee Mike Dean after the match. He looked very frustrated after this defeat against Burnley. Pochettino is a calm manager. It is quite rare to see him all disturbed and agitated following a tough result. This tough result was followed by another tough one where his team lost 2-0 away to Chelsea. The team did not manage a single shot on target at the Stamford Bridge.
One of the major reasons for the Argentine’s growing frustration is the team’s inconsistency. It was just 10 days back when his side registered an emphatic victory against Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund. And now they are winless in their last three games.
One of Spurs’ main issues this season has been injuries. Players like Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen have missed a lot of games this season through injury problems. On the other hand, Heung Min Son has also missed a handful of games due to his international duty with Korea.
Having not spent a single penny on players in the last two transfer windows, the lack of squad depth has caused the London team huge problems this season. Especially on the attacking side, Spurs has been overly dependent on Harry Kane and Heung Min Son while deputy attacking options like Lamela, Moura and Llorente have failed to make an impact in their absence.
Spurs need to invest in players to add to the depth of the squad. One of such players should be Leipzig’s, Yussuf Poulsen. The Danish attacker has arguably been the German team’s best player this season. He has scored 12 goals in 22 Bundesliga appearances. He has formed a formidable partnership upfront with German striker Timo Werner this season. This pair has a total of 23 goals in between them.
Poulsen has single-handedly won many games for his club this season scoring braces in crucial victories against rivals. It is due to his efforts that Leipzig in hanging in on the 4th spot in the Bundesliga table.
The Denmark international is praised for his work ethic as he tirelessly worries opposition defenders, creating time and space for his teammates to score a goal. He is one of the most underrated players in the world currently. The Dane is an attacking playmaker with a knack of scoring goals.
The Leipzig star plays alongside current Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen for the Denmark National Team. Their combination upfront helped the national team top their group in the UEFA Nations League- League B earlier this season.
The 25-year-old can continue this partnership with fellow Dane Eriksen at the club level too by joining Spurs in the summer transfer window. Poulsen can add up to Spurs’ much needed attacking depth. He can bring goals to the side when top players like Kane, Son and Alli are out injured. Pochettino needs to invest in this player. He can bring real quality to the Spurs’ side at a considerably low cost.
Last time when Spurs raided Bundesliga, it was for Heung Min Son who has become an invaluable asset for the Spurs team. Poulsen can follow the footsteps of the Korean and become a precious member of the Spurs’ team.
