Premier League Team of the Week – Gameweek 1
See who have made our Team of the Week from an exciting opening weekend in the Premier League.
Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool provide two players each, while there is one each from Aston Villa, Manchester City, Manchester United, Southampton and West Ham United.
Goalkeeper
Liverpool kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Stoke City at Anfield, and their summer signing Simon Mignolet was the star of the show.
The Belgium international denied Jonathan Walters from the spot and made five crucial saves during the game to help the Reds grab all three points.
Defence
In defence, Seamus Coleman was at his best as he scored a goal and created one for Barkley as Everton drew 2-2 at Norwich City, while Kolo Toure was solid at the back for Liverpool on his competitive debut and kept a clean sheet against a fighting Stoke City side.
Bransilav Ivanovic had two excellent games for Chelsea, keeping a clean sheet against Hull City on Sunday and then scoring the winner against Aston Villa during midweek as Jose Mourinho’s side made the perfect start to the season.
Luke Shaw filled in at left-back as the 18-year-old put in yet another impressive performance, including winning a late penalty in Southampton’s 1-0 win over West Brom.
Midfield
Joe Cole was outstanding for West Ham United and scored the opener in the Hammers’ 2-0 win over new boys Cardiff City at Upton Park, while Ross Barkley continued his impressive pre-season form by bossing the midfield and scoring Everton’s second goal at Carrow Road.
Frank Lampard rounds up our three-man midfield as the veteran was an integral part in Chelsea’s wins over Hull City and Aston Villa.
The English midfielder scored the Blues’ second goal against the Tigers from 35 yards and then delivered in a perfect freekick for Ivanovic to score the winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 win on Wednesday night.
Forward
Christian Benteke might have scored three goals for Aston Villa, but Gabriel Agbonlahor was the real star for the Villans in both the games against Arsenal and Chelsea.
The Englishman won both the penalties against the Gunners at the Emirates as Aston Villa won 3-1, and then got the better of Ivanovic to set up Benteke for Villa’s equaliser at Stamford Bridge during the midweek.
He is partnered by Edin Dzeko in the line-up here who was desperately unlucky not to score a goal of his own during Manchester City’s 4-0 thumping of Newcastle United, as he was the mastermind behind the result and played a part in two of the goals.
Finally, Robin van Persie completes our team of the week as the Dutchman continued his brilliant goalscoring form – which has seen him win the golden boot for the past two seasons – by bagging a brace in Manchester United’s impressive 4-1 win at Swansea City.
Here’s the line-up:
