PSG striker Cavani recalls unfair criticism

Paris, Nov 1 (IANS) Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Edinson Cavani has dubbed the criticism he received in the last season as unfair, saying that his current position as centre-forward makes him enjoy a good season, with 10 goals in 11 Ligue 1 football matches.

"Today I am here, at one of the best teams in the world, and this fills me with joy," said El Matador in an interview published on Monday by Le Parisien.

Although the Uruguayan spent much of the last season in the right wing, he said that he has "always respected the decision" of his then coach Laurent Blanc, but admitted that he does not do his best outside the box, reports Efe.

He had to play as a right wing due to the presence of former Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is playing for Manchester United this season.

"It's not that I didn't want to stay but, in my position, there was a great player in Ibra. I loved PSG but wanted to continue my career as a lone striker," he noted.

"So, at the end of last season, I had a meeting with the management at which I was told I would play center forward and at the time I was happy," he revealed.

Currently under the orders of Spanish coach Unai Emery, Cavani has emerged as the top scorer in the French Ligue 1.
