What's the story?

The winter transfer window will end in a few days and Paris Saint-Germain are desperate to bolster their midfield with some reinforcements.

According to reputed media outlet The Telegraph, Paris Saint-Germain are all set to beat Chelsea to secure the services of Leandro Paredes. PSG have been heavily linked to getting a midfielder on board in the current transfer window and the 24-year-old tops their wish list.

In case you didn't know...

Leandro Paredes has been a sensational performer for Zenit St. Petersburg this season and already has nine caps for his national team under his name. The Argentine midfielder is known for dominating opponents by pulling strings from a deep position in the midfield.

Meanwhile, after reportedly losing out on Frenkie De Jong to Barcelona, Paris Saint- Germain are eager to reinforce the squad before their crucial Champions League tie against Manchester United.

The heart of the matter

Due to major injuries to key players like Marco Verratti and Neymar Jr., PSG boss Thomas Tuchel spoke about the need for the team to sign midfielders to improve their squad depth in the January transfer window.

Moreover, the failure to secure the services of De Jong, and off-form of players like Angel Di Maria, Julian Draxler, amongst others, makes PSG's case worse. Although they are way ahead of their rivals in Ligue 1, their quest for European success remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, it was believed that Chelsea had agreed on a deal in principle earlier this month to sign Paredes from Zenit St. Petersburg as a replacement of Cesc Fabregas. According to reports, Chelsea were keen on other options like Barella and did not proceed quickly enough, which made it easier for PSG to make their move.

Rumor rating: 6/10

With PSG desperate to bring reinforcements to improve their midfield, it seems likely that the Paredes move will be official in a few days. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League giants delay the transfer with any last minute moves.

What's next?

PSG face a tough test in their quest for conquering Europe, against Manchester United. However, under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel, they are more of a cohesive unit.

It still remains to be seen how they compensate for the major absence of players due to injuries and poor form. But the arrival of a gifted midfielder like Leandro Paredes will only help their cause and boost their morale.
