PSV, Ajax open gap as Twente, Feyenoord drop points
The Hague, Feb 18 (IANS) PSV Eindhoven and Ajax Amsterdam made no mistake in the 23rd match round of the Dutch Eredivisie as they pulled away from rivals FC Twente and Feyenoord, who dropped points.
League leaders PSV Eindhoven came from a goal down to beat FC Utrecht 2-1 Sunday, reports Xinhua.
“It was an exciting match, especially in the last part,” said PSV coach Dick Advocaat. “But in terms of chances we should have finished the match much earlier.”
Following the 2-0 win against Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League on Thursday, Ajax coach Frank de Boer rested his complete front-line trio of Isaac Cuenca, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Viktor Fischer on Sunday against RKC.
With Jody Lukoki, captain Siem de Jong and Derk Boerrigter as forwards, Ajax had no difficulties and won 2-0. Niklas Moisander and Christian Eriksen scored in the first half, while RKC’s Robert Braber penalty was saved by goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer in the second part.
Also Sunday, Feyenoord suffered a shock 2-3 defeat at PEC Zwolle. FC Twente also dropped points after they drew 1-1 against Willem II.
PSV now lead the Eredivisie with 50 points from 23 matches, with reigning champions Ajax three points behind. FC Twente and Feyenoord are both on 44 points, while Vitesse round up the top five with 42 points.
