Reports: Real Madrid launch €28.5m bid for French record-holder

Zinedine Zidane Announced As New Real Madrid Manager
Zinedine Zidane - Real Madrid Manager

What's the story?

Tottenham Hotspur star Hugo Lloris is all set to be the subject of a concerted move by Real Madrid to bring him to Spain, according to a report in British news outlet, the Sunday Mirror. Florentino Perez is reportedly unhappy with Keylor Navas and is seeking a replacement that will not break the bank, having been thwarted in moves for David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois. Los Blancos are hoping to take advantage if Spurs fail to win a trophy this season, as Lloris has grown frustrated with the Lilywhites' lack of success, and has reportedly confided in French national teammate Raphael Varane.

In case you didn't know...

Lloris came through the ranks at boyhood club Nice, making his first appearance for the senior side in 2005, at the age of 18. He spent 3 seasons with the south-coast club, as his final season resulted in approaches from multiple clubs, with Lyon signing him for €8.5 million after a move to AC Milan broke down. 5 excellent seasons later, Tottenham signed Lloris for a €15 million fee - although Lyon would receive 20% of any future transfer fee.

The heart of the matter

Hugo Lloris has consistently been named amongst one of the best goalkeepers in the world over the last few years, as he has overseen a Tottenham defence that has arguably been the best in the Premier League. The Frenchman's performances have firmly established his place in the national team, with Lloris having surpassed Fabian Barthez' all-time record as the most-capped goalkeeper of France.

However, Lloris has grown disillusioned with Tottenham's ability to win a trophy of late - the Frenchman himself has only ever won two cups (with Lyon) in his entire career and is evaluating his options at the age of 30.

Florentino Perez is already familiar with how tough negotiations can be with Daniel Levy, so hopes that a substantial fee of £25 million ought to be enough.

Author's Take:

If Real Madrid are unable to lure either of David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois to the Bernabeu, they are better off sticking with Keylor Navas in goal. Hugo Lloris isn't much of an upgrade over the Costa Rican, and Florentino Perez would be more prudent in making a long-term signing such as Kepa Arrizabalaga.
