Real Madrid knock PSG out of the Champions League, and Twitter boils over

C
Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid were too hot for PSG to handle

Going into this tie with a 3-1 advantage from the home leg, Real Madrid's biggest advantage wasn't their aggregate. It was the fact that Paris Saint-Germain - a side that was touted to be the one that would put Zidane's men in the ground - were going to be handicapped by the absence of their biggest superstar, Neymar.

Ever since the Brazilian was ruled out of the fixture due to an ankle injury, most people around the world presumed that chances of a Parisien win were somewhere between slim and next to nothing - in hindsight, a rather accurate presumption, and last night proved why.

Without Neymar in their ranks, PSG were outclassed by Los Blancos in nearly every aspect. Further, they visibly lacked bite in attack as they could only muster a total of 8 shots, as compared to Madrid's 22.

Cristiano Ronaldo, just had to be him, didn't it?, opened the scoring in the 51st minute to give the Blancos the lead, which more importantly, came in the form of a valuable away goal. Valuable because up until that moment, PSG only needed to win 2-0 to knock Madrid out.

Marco Verratti did PSG no favours as he was showed yellow twice, and subsequently set off in the 66th minute. Edinson Cavani then restored an iota of hope as he struck home in the 71st. In reality, though, coming back from a deficit of 4-2 on aggregate was always going to be un uphill task. With 10 men, that's an incredibly steep ask.

Casemiro soon put the game to bed, and PSG out of their misery, in the 80th minute, giving Madrid a final aggregate score of 5-2 against Unai Emery's men, to qualify for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Twitter was, yet again, rather vocal, and here are some of the best tweets we found:

Cristiano Ronaldo, unsurprisingly, was the toast of the internet

Of course, Messi comparisons weren't far away

Real Madrid were widely hailed on social media after qualifying for yet another UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

PSG, on the other hand, were cruelly trolled

Some fans, I'd say, were slightly unreasonable

Okay then...
