What's the story?

Real Madrid superstar Marcelo is still in touch with his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, stating they have more important things to discuss than just football.

The veteran left-back has also opened up on his relationship with coach Zinedine Zidane, claiming that the Frenchman is like his big brother.

In case you didn't know..

After enjoying nine glittering years with Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus last summer. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner remains the greatest goalscorer in Los Blancos' history, with 450 goals and won four of his five Ballon d'Or trophies in his nine-year tenure at Santiago Bernabeu.

With the Spanish giants, Ronaldo won four Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns among other notable accolades. His decision to join Juventus last summer after winning three consecutive Champions League titles shocked many and the Spanish giants have undoubtedly suffered without him.

Meanwhile, Los Blancos endured an abysmal season which saw them ending the 2018/19 campaign without any major silverware. They sacked two coaches last season before Zinedine Zidane returned to take charge of the team.

Marcelo suffered due to his poor form throughout the 2018/19 campaign and eventually, lost his place to Sergio Reguilon for a few months.

The heart of the matter

Marcelo, who had strong chemistry with Ronaldo on and off the pitch, stated that he rarely speaks with the Portuguese superstar about their own careers.

Speaking in an interview, Marcelo said:

"We have much more important things than just football to discuss. We usually speak about our kids, who also play."

The Brazilian full-back also opened up about Zidane's return:

"For me, he is like a big brother. Not so much for playing me again, but rather for the joy he brings."

Marcelo missed Brazil's Copa America campaign but insists he will fight to regain his place with Brazil.

"The only thing I can do is work harder to regain a spot in the Brazilian national team. It is one of my objectives."

What's next?

Marcelo is set to take part in Real Madrid's pre-season friendlies which will start from mid-July.
