Real Madrid sit atop UEFA club rankings

Real Madrid’s consistent performances in the last five years have kept them on top

Last year’s Champions League winners Real Madrid are currently top of UEFA club coefficient rankings. They’re followed immediately by the current holders Barcelona in second, German champions Bayern Munich round of the third position and English champions Chelsea round off the top four.

While Barcelona put together the best coefficient points tally of the season, they were unable to unseat the Galacticos. However, another season like the current one could see Rafael Benitez’s side lose the top spot to their Spanish rivals or Pep Guardiola’s Bayern.

Juventus despite being among the top 3 for points haul this season failed to make it into the top ten. However, they are the highest ranked Italian side, with the only other representation from the country is Napoli who are ranked 20th in the standings.

Spanish and English sides saw the most representation in the top 10. Apart from the top two, Atletico Madrid also made 5th on the list and Valencia in 12th round up the Spanish representation in the best 20 at the moment.

While English sides failed to perform up to standards in this year’s European competition, three of them – Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United make the top 10. Add to that Manchester City who ended up in 17th position, it puts them on par with the Spanish sides’ representation.

Germany haven’t lagged back too far, apart from the now traditional presence of Bayern Munich among the top four, Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen make the top 20 sides.

The rest was made up by 2 Portuguese teams in the top 10 – Benfica and Porto – and a single team each from France (Paris Saint-Germain), Russia (Zenit St.Petersburg), Ukraine (Shakhtar Donetsk) and Switzerland (Basel).

Tottenham finished just outside the top 20 in 21st position. They were closely followed by veterans of the competition AC Milan in 22nd and Europa League Champions for two years in a row - Sevilla who were 23rd.

Inter followed in 24th and another English side with great history, Liverpool finished in 42nd position.

Teams receive points at every level of progress in European competition and for wins and participation in the group stages. A sum of the points accumulated in the previous 5 seasons provides the basis of the UEFA coefficient.
