Report: Martin Skrtel set to sign new contract with Liverpool

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel will extend his contract with the club according to his agent

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has turned down interest from Italian side Inter Milan and will sign a new contract with Liverpool according to reports. The defender's agent says that the 30-year-old has pledged his future to Anfield.

The Slovakian captain had just a year running on his contract which courted interest from the likes of Inter Milan. But latest reports are suggesting that the defender who joined Liverpool in the 2007-08 season has rejected any plans of cutting his ties with Liverpool.

Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini is believed to be a long-standing admirer of the central defender. But Skrtel is expected to sign a new contract after he returns to the club from his holidays.

"I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real,” Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto said. He further added, “But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made."

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool," Csonto said. The news will be well received by Brendan Rodgers who is currently embroiled in a transfer saga involving Raheem Sterling.

With Skrtel reportedly committing his future to Anfield, the Reds can turn their attention to strengthening their squad for the upcoming season. And it is believed that Charlton youngster Joe Gomez is on his way to Liverpool from Charlton for a deal worth  £3.5million. The youngster is believed to be joining his new club this weekend. The 18-year-old plays as a central defender and can also play at right-back.
