Reports: Arsenal to target Edinson Cavani if James Vardy transfer fails

Wenger’s new target as search for striker continues

Arsene Wenger has set sights on signing Edinson Cavani if Jamie Vardy snubs the move according to Daily Express. Cavani is currently with the Uruguayan National team but will be on vacation after their match vs Jamaica on Monday as they have already been eliminated from Copa America.

Arsenal activated Jamie Vardy’s £20 million release clause before the English striker went to France for EURO 2016. The striker was all set for the move to Emirates but a late contract offer from Leicester City and his team-mates begging him to stay is said to have changed Vardy’s mind. He is yet to announce his decision but Arsenal legend, reported that Vardy was set for a medical before going to France but then suddenly nothing happened. Talking to talkSPORT, Parlour said “I was at the Arsenal the other day and there were big reports flying around, and the club’s cameramen and digital staff had to get down to the training ground. So it looked like it was going to happen - there was a medical being done. But it seems Vardy thought about it while on England duty, and suddenly there was a U-turn.”

Cavani, on the other hand, is said to be keen on leaving Paris Saint-German this summer. He is said to have rejected a massive contract offer from a Chinese club as he wants to test himself in England. The contract reported rejected by Cavani is said to be worth a massive £500,000 per week! Cavani has been a long-term target for Arsenal while Chelsea have been keen on signing him ever since his Napoli days.

Copa America has been a tournament to forget Cavani as he failed to lead the attack for Uruguay. He’s failed to score chances and this has resulted in an early exit from the competition. He was in fine form for PSG last season, scoring 19 goals in 32 appearances and so people expected him to replicate the same for his country. Despite his poor form in Copa America, Chelsea and Juventus are also said to be interested in him. Antonio Conte wants to sign a striker at Chelsea while Massimiliano Allegri is looking for a replacement for Alvaro Morata.

Wenger is looking to sign a top notch striker this summer to put more pressure on Olivier Giroud as Danny Welbeck will be out for more than half of next season injury. Cavani’s desire to work in England and Wenger’s search for a top striker might just make them cross paths in the coming months. PSG will demand a lot more than £20 million for the striker whom they made a whopping £55 million back in 2013.
