Reports: Liverpool to battle Arsenal for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s signature

Klaas Jan-Huntelaar scored 12 goals last season.

Liverpool are ready to wage war with Arsenal for the signature of Dutch international striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, according to the Daily Express.

With Luis Suarez edging ever closer to the Anfield exit door, reports in the Netherlands suggest that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sees Huntelaar as an ideal replacement for the Uruguayan dynamo. A move for the controversial striker from Barcelona is looking ever more likely.

Arsenal are long-term suitors for Huntelaar, and there are reports that Arsenal are set to make their interest concrete with a move this summer. Liverpool have targeted Huntelaar before, after the departure of Andy Carroll to West Ham, but the Dutch striker chose to remain at Schalke.

Huntelaar’s contract with Schalke has entered its final year, however, and he is yet to agree terms on a new deal with the club from Gelsenkirchen.

While Schalke general manager Horst Heldt is keen to keep all of his players this summer, he is aware that they could lose Huntelaar for free next summer, and isn’t keen to see that happen.
