Reports say senior Manchester United players want Jose Mourinho to take over as they lose confidence in Louis Van Gaal

Van Gaal’s job as United manager has been subject to intense speculation with Mourinho favourite to replace him

Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal has supposedly lost the faith of his senior players according to reports emerging from The Guardian. Though the Dutchman is generally well liked by most of the United squad, an influential group of senior players are said to be uneasy about the tactics and training of the veteran Dutch manager.

Although most of the players recognise that they are also responsible for the dismal showing on the field, many of them believe that the arrival of Jose Mourinho can reinvigorate the club.

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, continues to deliberate on his options, but he will know he will have to act quick if he wants to secure the services of the ‘special one’.

Mourinho reportedly has many options and he made it clear that he will not be taking over at Italian side Inter Milan. He said:

“There is one thing I want to clarify – I will not be directing things over there next season,” Mourinho told La Stampa. “My next club? I really do not know, but one thing is certain – I love football and I will return with the same passion and ambition I’ve always had.

“Right now I have respect for every coach at every club. I’m not looking for a club, but there are clubs that are looking for me.”

Michael Carrick apologises to fans for 2-1 loss against Midtjylland

Following Thursday’s dismal loss against Danish side Midtjylland, Michael Carrick apologised to the 800 United fans who had travelled and paid £71 to watch the Europa League match.

He said: “I can’t knock the supporters, they were incredible. They’ve been great throughout my time at the club, especially during the last couple of years when they haven’t had much to shout about.

“They’ve stuck with us and travelled to support us, so I can only apologise.”

Carrick refused to use injuries as a reason saying:

“I don’t think you can use injuries as an excuse It is something that is not ideal but I can’t make any excuses. I can’t put that down as a reason for losing.”

“The second half wasn’t good enough,” said Carrick. “And they are no excuses for that. We were not good enough at all and the only positive is that we’ve got another go at it next week. We’re bitterly disappointed, and frustrated and angry at the performance and the result tonight but when the dust settles over the next few days we will get ourselves ready for the games coming up.”

Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways when they take on Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Monday.
