Reports: Spurs eyeing a 'cut-price' move for Liverpool and Barcelona's target
What's the story?
According to the Spanish media outlet, Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign the wantaway PSG midfielder, Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman has been a long-term target for both Liverpool and FC Barcelona.
With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, PSG now faces a fear of letting him leave for free in the summer. With only six days remaining for the transfer window to shut down, it is the right time for Tottenham to sign a player for a cut-price after a year-long transfer drought at the Wembley.
In case you didn't know..
PSG's playmaker, Adrien Rabiot is well known for his passing skills and domination in the Aerial duels. Even though the Frenchman does not register his name on the scoresheet more often, his intelligence and decision making at the heart of the football pitch can be an asset for any European team.
The 23-year-old has been a top target for Liverpool and Barcelona since the last summer. However, with Frenkie de Jong's arrival in the approaching summer, Barcelona might consider backing out in their pursuit to land the Frenchman.
On the other hand, Mauricio Pochettino reportedly held talks with the Frenchman and promised him a key role in the Spurs team.
The heart of the matter
Rabiot's PSG contract is set to expire at the end of the season and there are no reports of a contract extension from the Parc des Princes. Hence, PSG fears to let him leave for free in the coming summer.
Considering the current situation at the French capital, Spurs are lining up a €20 million cut-price bid to secure the services of the Frenchman, according to The Sun.
With the arrival of the PSG playmaker, Tottenham would not only end their transfer duck but also find a suitable replacement for the departed Mousa Dembele.
Rumour rating: 6/10
If this deal happens, it would be a profitable deal for all the parties involved. The only thing against Tottenham is time. It remains to see how will the story unfold in the coming week.
What's next?
Mauricio Pochettino's men are currently occupying the third spot of the league table, nine points adrift of the top.
With UCL round of 16 fixtures against Borussia Dortmund inching closer, the inclusion of Rabiot would provide more depth to the Spurs squad. And Rabiot, with more European experience, could be an asset for the Londoners.
