Robert Lewandowski says Gonzalo Higuain cannot replace him as Bayern Munich's top striker
Bayern Munich’s star striker Robert Lewandowski has laughed off reports suggesting any insecurity on his part arising from a possible move by the club to land Napoli marksman Gonzalo Higuain. The Bavarian giants have been linked with a move for the in-form Argentine striker following his hot streak for the Naples-based outfit this season.
Former Real Madrid striker Higuain has been in tremendous form this season as he has plundered 20 goals in as many appearances for Napoli. His goals have directly fueled Napoli’s Scudetto pursuit as they lead the Serie A standings with 44 points from 20 games thus far.
Earlier, Bayern’s Chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had revealed his admiration for Higuain and also talked up a possible move for the striker if he were to become available. This statement sparked speculations regarding the Polish striker’s future at the Allianz Arena and consistent reports of a host of Premier League bigwigs awaiting his signature only helped stoke the fire.
Lewandowski’s agent Maik Barthel’s comments which warned the Bayern hierarchy over their public courting of Higuain also did not help in calming the rumours surrounding his star client. However, the striker has finally broken his silence and expressed his thoughts on the matter.
"I don't know what Bayern's plans for the future look like, but it would not be a problem for me if they signed another striker, regardless of whether that's Higuain or someone else," said Lewandowski.
"I will still be playing if another striker arrives. I'm convinced of my own qualities. I am strong enough."
Bayern have always competed with big Premier League clubs financially: Lewandowski
Lewandowski has also suggested that the Bundesliga champions have no reason to worry about the financial might of the big clubs from England as he outlined the fact that the club had always held their own in the past.
Even with the 27-year-old being linked with a big-money move to several of the big Premier League clubs on numerous occasions coupled with the monstrous television deal that is set to make them even richer next season, the striker feels that he would not have to move from the Allianz Arena as the Bavarians have always competed with them when it came to money.
"I don't seen any difference between Bayern and England's big clubs," he added.
"Of course, the English clubs have plenty of money to spend, but they have always had a lot of money and Bayern have always been able to compete.”
"There is not a single club in England that will catch Bayern just because they have more money all of a sudden."
