Roberto Martinez pays respect to David Moyes' contributions to Everton
Roberto Martinez played down the hostile reaction David Moyes received from the Everton fans, feeling it shows how far Everton have progressed that they see Manchester United as one of their close rivals in the league.
Moyes left the Toffees to join United at the end of last season and has endured a difficult first season at Old Trafford, culminating in defeat on Sunday in his first return to Goodison Park, with Martinez having now eclipsed the Manchester United manager in the Premier League.
Martinez however praised Moyes for the work he did prior to his arrival from Wigan and is hopeful that Everton can push on from this victory and force their way into Champions League qualification.
Martinez told Sky Sports following the game, “A lot has been said about his return.
“His reception was the standing ovation he got against West Ham on the last day of last season. He is now Manchester United manager and there is huge competition between the two clubs.
“What he achieved at Everton will never be forgotten.
The next three games are exciting and we will try and get as many points as possible. We don’t expect Arsenal to drop points easily, we are just looking to ourselves and trying to achieve the maximum number of points we can.”
