Newly appointed Liverpool manager is trying to persuade his star striker Luis Suarez to sign a new contract after Serie A champions Juventus confirmed their interest in the Uruguayan international.

Former manager Kenny Dalglish brought the 25-year-old striker to the club from Ajax for a reported fee of £22.8 million. Suarez already has a contract till the summer of 2016 but after having a great start to his Liverpool career, he has attracted interest from all over Europe. However, Rodgers does not want to lose Suarez and is hopeful that a new contract can be agreed.

“I’ve had a brilliant chat with Luis. He’s really looking forward to being here.

“We are obviously hoping we can get him on to another new contract. He’s really looking forward to the new season.”

Speaking about Liverpool’s transfer plans over the summer, the former Swansea manager revealed that the Reds will make a few quality signings. He added:

“I’m looking forward to bringing in three or four players that can really affect the group. The reality is there are very few players who can come and make a difference to Liverpool.”

Liverpool are expected to be without Suarez when they leave for their pre-season tour to United States as the player is expected to be a part of his country’s Olympics team. And Rodgers hopes the players will manage to stay fit for the start of the new season.

“As a manager you want all your players in and together but there will be a number of players away for that (the Olympics). The most important thing is to get fit. If he is in the Olympics he will be doing pre-season with the Olympic squad.”
