"Romelu can be as good as he wants to be!" - Roberto Martinez
Following on from my Lukaku post yesterday, I want to focus on the Everton Manager Roberto Martinez’s opinion which is important as it’s he that pushed hard to sign Lukaku on loan before the window closed.
Now he has his man and in return Lukaku has scored six goals in seven appearances, Martinez has been quick to speak of the young Belgian and the chance he has at Everton this season.
He said:
“Romelu can be as good as he wants to be. He will get the opportunity here. He will have the time to experiment things and try things. Remember that he hasn’t played many 90 minutes in his career and it is important he does play 90 minutes for us because that allows his game to go into full flow. That is the way he is as a player.
How many games did he play 90 minutes at West Brom? He was involved in 35 games – how many did he play in [from the start]? Seven.
So it is like seeing a young man who has now become a proper man with an important role and that’s what we want him to have here. This is the first time in his career that he is going to take that role so everything is in his hands.”

You have to give credit to Martinez. He has backed Lukaku and stating on record that he will be playing 90 minutes more often than not this season which has to be a massive boost to Lukaku.
I have often said that managers these days need to be as good as a man manager as being tactically aware and a good coach and it seems that Martinez is exactly that.
The positive for all of us out of his loan move is the player that will come back to Chelsea next season. If Martinez stands by what he has said and Lukaku gets to feature as much as he has been told, we will have one hell of a better player ready to do the same at Stamford Bridge.
What do you think of the backing Lukaku has received from Martinez and how good do you think he can be this season?
