Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber involved in training ground bust-up with ex-Premier League star; Ronald Koeman forced to intervene: Reports
Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber was reportedly involved in a dressing room bust-up with former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst. Both players are currently on international duty with the Netherlands for the UEFA Nations League campaign.
They won their first match 5-2 against Bosnia and Herzegovina 5-2 on Saturday, September 7. Ronald Koeman's men are preparing for their second group match against Germany on Tuesday, September 10.
The news comes from Metro, who claim that the Dutch stars were involved in a slight brawl after Timber caught Weghorst on his ankles. However, the issue was seemingly resolved by manager Koeman, who stepped in to cool the situation (via Tribal Football).
Both players failed to find a place in the Netherlands' first XI in the previous game but did come on as substitutes. Timber has been starting for Arsenal as a left-back amid competition from Oleksandr Zinchenko and Riccardo Calafiori.
He's a versatile footballer who can also play in central defensive positions and at right-back. Timber will be looking to make an impression this campaign after missing nearly the entirety of the 2023-24 season with injury.
The versatile defender has made 16 appearances across competitions for the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Ajax striker Weghorst has featured on 40 occasions for the Dutch, bagging 13 goals.
Jurrien Timber makes favorite position admission as he steps into a new role at Arsenal
Jurrien Timber has seemingly admitted that his role at Arsenal lies in the left-back slot. However, the Netherlands international has conceded that his favorite position is centre-back.
It seems highly unlikely that the 23-year-old will see minutes in this position, given William Saliba and Gabriel have locked down these roles. Claiming that he's happy playing regardless of his position, Timber said (via Mirror):
"The centre of defence at Arsenal sits with Saliba and Gabriel. Where I play doesn't matter to me as long as I'm playing. I can do well there (left-back) and the national team coach can also put me there."
Timber will likely start for Arsenal when they face Tottenham Hotspur after the international break on Sunday, September 15. The Gunners are fourth in the Premier League with seven points, two points short of leaders Manchester City after three games.
