Arsenal star linked with a move to surprise Premier League club as Mikel Arteta seeks alternatives: Reports
Newcastle United have reportedly set sights on signing Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal. The Magpies are preparing for a possible departure of Alexander Isak, as several top clubs chase him.
As per a report from Fichajes.net, Jesus is the top target for Newcastle United. They see the Brazilian as the ideal player to join Eddie Howe's side and lead their attack.
The Magpies already have two Brazilians in their starting XI – Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton – and believe the addition of the former Manchester City star will help them on the pitch. However, they are looking to bring in the Arsenal man only if Isak is sold.
Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing the 25-year-old Swede striker next year. They are also looking to sell Jesus as the Brazilian has fallen down the pecking order at the club and is no longer trusted by Mikel Arteta.
The report says Arsenal want €65 million for the 27-year-old Brazilian striker next year.
Arsenal and Newcastle United to swap strikers?
Former player Jermaine Pennant recently spoke about Arsenal needing a striker and said Alexander Isak is the ideal fit. At the launch of Ladbrokes' 'Gaffer of all Accas,' Pennant said (via Yahoo Sports):
"What I'd suggest is a number nine; a good, solid number nine. There aren't many out there at the moment, but Alexander Isak is someone who I think would fit perfectly. He's quick, he's strong, and he's proven he can score goals in this division… I'm sure he would get a lot more, playing for a team like Arsenal, who create so many chances."
"They've got a lot of defensive players now; that was their weak point over the years, but they've almost got an overflow of top defenders, and defensive players, now. Jorginho, Declan Rice and Thomas Partey can all play in the same position, and they've got so much cover at the back. I think it's just in the attacking areas which is where they should look to strengthen again," he added.
Tim Sherwood has also echoed Pennant's thoughts, saying the Swede striker is perfect for the Gunners. He said (via TBR Football):
"Do you know what worries me about you playing Newcastle? Someone might be rehearsing in front of Mikel, Isak. He's perfect for you. He can play down the left, he can go down the middle, he's an absolute perfect Arsenal player. He might be saying, 'if you're looking, I'm here.' Not that he wants to leave Newcastle, but I would suggest he is an upgrade if you want to challenge for the title."
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Isak but Newcastle United are not interested in selling him. They are in talks with the former Real Sociedad striker to keep him at the club longer.
