Barcelona exploring move for star player who played for Manchester United last season - Reports

According to Sky Sports News, Barcelona have gotten in touch with Tottenham Hotspur to discuss a move for Sergio Reguilon. The Spaniard spent the 2023-24 season away on two different loan spells, first at Manchester United and then at Brentford.

Reguilon's loan at United was cut short as the club expected Tyrell Malacia to be back, which is yet to materialize. He also played for Brentford but isn't expected to be a part of Ange Postecoglou's plans and Spurs are open to selling.

Barcelona, meanwhile, struggled with a lack of left-backs last season following Alejandro Balde's injury. Joao Cancelo often deputized but he was on loan last season and has since returned to Manchester City.

Balde, only 20, has seldom played during pre-season and the youngster bearing the burden single handedly could be detrimental. Hence, Barca have turned their attention to Reguilon and are reportedly discussing a potential deal structure with Spurs.

Reguilon, 27, has extensive experience in Spanish football as he is an academy product of Real Madrid. He spent 15 years at the club before permanently leaving in 2020. Reguilon made 22 appearances for Los Blancos and has also played for Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

For Spurs, he has so far made 67 appearances, scoring twice and providing eight assists. Loan spells have been a staple of Reguilon's career and Barca could be his next destination. Any potential term of a possible move, though, remains unknown. The six-time Spain international is currently in the final year of his Spurs contract.

What Barcelona target Sergio Reguilon said after his Manchester United departure

Sergio Reguilon's Manchester United spell came to an abrupt end. The Red Devils banked on Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw's fitness but the former missed the entirety of the 2023-24 season and the latter a major part.

Reguilon potentially staying could have been helpful as Victor Lindelof or Diogo Dalot often had to play as the left-back. The player, though, was in good spirits after leaving the Red Devils. He said (via Mirror):

"It has been great to play for Manchester United and I just want to say thank you to the club, the fans, and my teammates. It was a privilege to play for this huge club and I wish all the best for the Red Devils."

United were even linked with a move to bring back Reguilon earlier in the summer but now Barcelona are among likely destinations for the full-back. Having already played for Real Madrid and Man United, the Spaniard could add Barcelona to his glowing CV.
