Barcelona given positive update on Lamine Yamal's fitness after his injury in recent LaLiga clash: Reports
Barcelona have reportedly been handed a huge boost as Lamine Yamal could recover from an ankle injury earlier than widely expected. This latest development is as per Diario AS (via Barca Universal).
Yamal sustained an ankle injury in Barcelona's 1-0 La Liga loss to Leganes last weekend (December 15). Hence, a series of tests were carried out to determine the extent of the injury.
The result of the medical test conducted reportedly indicates that there was no damage to Yamal's external lateral ligament. This implies that his recovery process could be easier and he could make a return to the squad earlier than speculated.
The Spaniard has been important for La Blaugrana this season and his potential return could be key for Hansi Flick in attack. In 21 appearances across all competitions, the youngster has scored six goals and registered 12 assists.
Barcelona will take on Atletico Madrid in their next league game on Saturday, December 21. Ferran Torres is expected to replace Yamal in the right-wing given that he's the natural replacement of the 17-year-old.
Barcelona willing to extend Frenkie de Jong contract - Reports
La Blaugrana's hierarchy are looking to extend Frenkie de Jong's contract, according to journalist Alfredo Martinez (via Barca Universal). They are less likely to also make any signing in the winter transfer window as opposed to several speculations.
The aforementioned report suggests that La Blaugrana will look to extend the contracts of several players instead of signing new ones. This comes after rumors had emerged that De Jong might be sold amidst La Blaugrana's financial dilemma.
De Jong joined the Catalan Giants from Ajax for a reported €86 million in July 2019. However, he has witnessed a reduction in his playing time in recent months.
The Dutchman has only registered 13 appearances for Barca this season, most of which were from the bench. While this could be linked to the ankle injury that he sustained earlier in the campaign, La Blaugrana are looking to extend his contract.
De Jong's contract at Camp Nou is scheduled to expire in June 2026. However, the La Liga side are looking to extend his stay at the club beyond that. It is believed that his experience and leadership qualities are appreciated by Flick and he's part of the club's long-term objectives.
