Barcelona president Joan Laporta identifies Premier League star as ideal successor to replace Robert Lewandowski in 2025: Reports
Barcelona president Joan Laporta reportedly is making plans for a future without main striker Robert Lewandowski, with the Polish marksman now approaching age 36. To that end, he has identified habitual Premier League winner Julian Alvarez as the ideal successor to take over the position moving forward.
According to a report from El Nacional, the Blaugrana president is not working with a short-term view in mind, and he sees Alvarez as an option for the summer of 2025.
The Argentine striker has had a glorious start to his career, winning the World Cup and Copa America with his country. He has also won the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City, while the Cityzens have regularly dominated the Premier League in recent years.
However, the 24-year-old is not pleased with the amount of playing time he has been provided at the Etihad Stadium. While he remains an impressive player, he plays second fiddle to Erling Haaland.
This has led to rumors that he would be itching for a move elsewhere, and Joan Laporta has set his sights on the forward. The Barcelona president will be concerned about other suitors, as other clubs would be looking to snatch up the World Cup winner if they can.
However, Julian Alvarez considers Blaugrana icon Lionel Messi his idol and a move to Barca could fulfill a lifelong dream. It will be expensive for Laporta to push for the 24-year-old forward now, which will mean asking him to wait at Manchester City for one more season.
However, with Lewandowski potentially spending just one more year at Barca, a move for Alvarez could be underway next summer.
Robert Lewandowski speaks after joining Barcelona for pre-season
Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has spoken about being a mentor to the younger players at Camp Nou ahead of the upcoming season. The Polish marksman will be working under new manager Hansi Flick, who will be seeking to win titles with the club.
Lewandowski revealed that his experience and age would come in handy for the young players (via Bavarian Football Works):
“I think with my experience and my age I can help them. There are players who have had a short time at Barcelona and they are very young, but I think going to the World Cup, for example, it will be useful to gain experience, that’s what happened to me.
"After my first major tournament with Poland, I became a better player. Of course, when next year begins, many of the youngsters in Barcelona will be better footballers. And not only with the ball but also when it comes to taking responsibility within the team. Time is in their favor.”
Barcelona have opened the door to a number of youthful players, including the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, both teenagers. They will be grateful for Lewandowski's experience in the coming season.
