Barcelona at risk of losing out in race to sign 24-year-old striker as Tottenham table offer to sign him: Reports
Barcelona have reportedly suffered a setback in their pursuit of Lille striker Jonathan David. According to SPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have submitted a significant offer to prise the player away in 2025.
The Canadian attacker's contract with Lille expires at the end of this season and he hasn't signed a new deal yet. Thus the clubs are lining up for his services and the Catalan side are also among his suitors.
The LaLiga giants are looking for a new striker to eventually succeed Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker has been in a rich vein of form this season, registering 23 goals from 21 games across competitions.
However, the 36-year-old is already in the final phase of his career and Barcelona are eager to lay down succession plans. David is among the candidates who have popped up on their radar.
This season, the Canadian has registered 17 goals from 23 games across competitions, forcing clubs across the continent to take note.
The aforementioned report adds that Hansi Flick and Deco are not entirely convinced as he struggles in tight situations. As such, the LaLiga giants are yet to submit their proposal to the player's camp.
Tottenham Hotspur have now marched ahead in the race.
Are Barcelona eyeing a move for Viktor Gyokeres?
Barcelona remain eager to reinforce their attack and reportedly have their eyes on Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres as well. The Swedish striker has been outstanding for the Portuguese since joining them in the summer of 2023.
This year, Gyokeres has registered 25 goals from 22 games across competitions. The Catalan giants are pleased with his efforts and are reportedly willing to offer €70m for his services.
However, the LaLiga giants are not the only club eyeing the striker. Gyokeres also has admirers at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), while Newcastle United have been mentioned as a suitor as well.
Meanwhile, Barcelona will also face competition from Manchester United in the race for Gyokeres. The Swede enjoyed tremendous success under Ruben Amorim at Sporting.
The Portuguese tactician took charge as the Red Devils head coach in November and a reunion at Old Trafford has been mooted for a while. The player's contract runs until 2028, but he could be on the move at the end of this season.
