Barcelona star decides he wants to play in England, ready to leave Camp Nou: Reports
According to journalist Gabriel Sans, Sergi Roberto has decided to leave Camp Nou and play in England. Roberto doesn't want to wait any longer for the club to register him.
Roberto's Barca contract has already expired and with the club's ongoing financial difficulties, he hasn't been offered a renewal yet. As per Mundo Deportivo (via GOAL), Roberto has decided not to wait any longer and join the Premier League.
Deco reportedly had a previous meeting with the veteran and told him that Barca would be willing to make a renewal offer for the versatile player. Roberto, however, hasn't returned to training under new manager Hansi Flick.
Several La Liga sides, like Girona, Valencia, and Sevilla are reportedly interested in the 32-year-old. Roberto, a product of the La Masia academy, has so far made 373 appearances for the Catalan club, scoring 19 goals and providing 43 assists.
He has won 22 trophies with Barca, including two UEFA Champions League titles, and seven La Liga trophies. Throughout his career, Roberto has shown exceptional adaptability, often playing as a full-back or as a central midfielder.
The Spaniard has also played as a winger when his club needed him to do so. Roberto has also made 11 appearances for Spain's national team, scoring once.
Xavi urged Barcelona to keep hold of Sergi Roberto
Sergi Roberto looks to be heading out of the exit door this summer. Over the years, he has proven to be a utility player who has sacrificed for the club. His commitment couldn't be questioned.
Xavi even urged Azulgrana not to let go of Roberto as he said at the end of the last season that Roberto was important in the locker room as well as on the pitch. Xavi said (via GOAL):
"I don't know if it will be his last season. My recommendation to the club is to renew him. I think he's a very important team player, both in the locker room and on the field."
Getting Roberto off the wage book, though, could be important in the Catalan club's financial situation. La Blaugrana have been linked with names like Nico Williams, Dani Olmo, and more, for which they need to be in a good financial state.
