Barcelona superstar ruled out of the rest of the season after picking up injury against Real Madrid: Reports
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after picking up an injury against Real Madrid on Sunday, April 21.
De Jong started the El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu, which La Blaugrana lost by a score of 2-3. The Dutchman, however, had a coming together with Fede Valverde right before halftime and suffered a nasty-looking injury. He was replaced by Pedri.
While there's no official statement regarding De Jong's injury yet, the Dutchman is expected to be out at least for a month, according to a report in Football Espana. As a result, he is set to miss the remainder of the season and could potentially see his Euro 2024 campaign get affected.
Barcelona, meanwhile, squandered the chance to cover ground on Real Madrid in the La Liga title race with the defeat at Santiago Bernabeu. Xavi's side took an early lead through Andreas Christensen (6') before Vinicius Junior equalized from the penalty spot (18').
Fermin Lopez's 68th-minute strike was canceled out by Lucas Vazquez (73') before Jude Bellingham won the game through an injury-time strike (90+1').
Azulgrana now have 70 points from 32 matches, while Los Blancos are on 81 points.
Real Madrid fans show heartfelt gesture for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
While Frenkie de Jong is a Barcelona player, his talent and abilities are well-respected among rival fans. He received applause from Real Madrid fans as well when being stretchered off the field.
De Jong has made 30 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring two goals. Considering he is out for the remainder of the campaign, Pedri is the most likely choice to replace him in the middle of the park.
Barca still have a few important games coming up this season as they play Valencia, Girona, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, and more. Fans will keep a keen eye on how Xavi sets his team up in De Jong's absence.
