Barcelona waiting for superstar forward to make definite decision about his future at the club: Reports
As per reports, Barcelona are waiting for superstar forward Robert Lewandowski to make a definite decision about his future with the Catalan giants. According to SPORT (via Barca Universal), the club are looking to determine if the 36-year-old should get a contract renewal, but the report revealed that the decision lies with Lewandowski.
In the summer of 2022, the Polish marksman joined the club from Bayern Munich, where he had become one of the greatest players in German football history. He has continued his remarkable run of goalscoring form, albeit at a somewhat lower level, scoring 82 goals and providing 19 assists in 119 games for Barca.
Now 36 years old, his form seems to have dipped. He enjoyed a stunning run in his first 11 La Liga games this season, scoring 14 goals in that period. However, he has scored just twice in his last seven league games, raising questions about his potential continuity with the Catalan giants.
Lewandowski's contract will expire in 2026, but Barcelona can choose to terminate his contract in the summer of 2025. Club president Joan Laporta had revealed that the club would extend his contract if he completes 50% of Barca's games this season. While he seems on track to do so, this could change if his goalscoring form does not improve.
According to SPORT's report, the club expect Robert Lewandowski to return to form. If he fails to do so, he may not meet up to the number of games, giving the Catalan giants the ability to terminate his contract.
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick pushes club to improve performances
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has spoken about the club's poor run of form in the league. This comes after they were dealt a 2-1 loss at the hands of Atletico Madrid yesterday at the Lluis Companys (December 21).
Barca have won just one match in their last seven league games - a 5-1 win over RCD Mallorca away from home in early December. The Blaugrana were sitting pretty at the top of the table for a few months, but their poor form has seen them drop to second place.
After the match, Hansi Flick said to the press (via Barca Blaugranes):
“I think our style was fantastic. I’m sad. I’m happy for Pedri, with Gavi... and we’ll work on this next year. We’re not giving up. This break is sad, but we’ll come back strong. The squad shows that it can score more goals.
“We play football to win. The points lost against Las Palmas and Leganés are in the past. We have to concentrate on the next ones at home, we have to win every game. We have to concentrate on the next games at home."
Barcelona will play their next La Liga match against Getafe on January 18, after they return from the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.
