Chelsea consider performing U-turn over decision to part ways with 24-year-old star: Reports
Chelsea are reportedly considering changing their minds over Conor Gallagher's sale and offering the midfielder a new contract. The Blues have been looking to offload the 13-cap England international to help their finances.
The Guardian reports that the west Londoners could decide to keep Gallagher, who has a year left on his contract. They may offer the versatile midfielder a new deal.
Gallagher was one of Chelsea's finest performers last season, registering seven goals and nine assists in 50 games across competitions. Due to Reece James and Ben Chilwell's injuries, he occasionally wore the captain's armband.
The Blues have held talks with Aston Villa for their academy graduate, who they value at £50 million. They have discussed a potential swap deal involving Colombian striker Jhon Duran, for who the Villians want £40 million.
Gallagher's future will be sorted after Euro 2024, as he's set to represent England in Germany. Former manager Mauricio Pochettino constantly praised him throughout last season amid speculation over his future. Enzo Maresca has since succeeded the Argentine coach, and his stance on the situation is unknown.
The English star made his Chelsea senior debut in August 2022 after several spells out on loan. The Epsom-born midfielder has since bagged 10 goals and as many assists in 95 games across competitions.
"An excellent fit" - Jamie O'Hara backs Chelsea's Conor Gallagher to move to Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur are another Premier League club linked with Gallagher. Spurs were interested in signing him last summer but he stayed at Stamford Bridge.
Jamie O'Hara has tipped the Lilywhites to reignite their interest in Gallagher and secure his signature. Their former midfielder talked up the Englishman's abilities and how he'd suit Ange Postecoglou (via DAZN):
"I believe Conor Gallagher would be an excellent fit for Tottenham and I can see him making the move this summer. Tottenham should be eager to buy him, but it will depend on whether Daniel Levy is willing to invest in the transfer. I think he’s the perfect signing for Tottenham's needs this summer."
Gallagher is a workhorse who helped Chelsea both defensively and in attack last season. He showed vast progress throughout the 2023-24 campaign, making him a fan favorite.
The former Crystal Palace loanee could replace Spurs' Pierre-Emile Hojberg, whose future is uncertain. The Danish midfielder has a year left on his contract and has been on Atletico Madrid's radar, per The Daily Mail.
